How to Add an Intermediate Inventory Item and Define Its Recipe.

Modified on Wed, 27 Aug at 8:53 PM

1. What are Intermediate Items?

Intermediate Items are semi-finished or pre-prepared items that are manufactured in-house and later used in final dishes.
Examples: special sauces, masalas, or pre-mixed ingredients.

They act as both stock items (since they are produced and stored) and recipe ingredients (since they are consumed in final dishes).

2. Why do we use Intermediate Items?

  • To simplify recipe management for complex dishes.

  • To maintain consistency in taste and preparation.

  • To track accurate inventory usage of raw ingredients.

  • To streamline production (prepare in bulk and use multiple times).

Steps to Create an Intermediate Item

  1. Navigate to Inventory Item

    • From the left menu, go to Inventory → Inventory Item.

  2. Add a New Item

    • Click the “+” (Add) button on the top-right.

  3. Enter Basic Details

    • Fill in the following fields:

      • Name: Enter the Intermediate Item name (e.g., Special Masala).

      • Category: Choose the category (e.g., Grocery).

      • Base Measurement Unit: Select the base unit (e.g., GRM).

  4. Select Item Type

    • Choose Intermediate as the Item Type.

  5. Configure Units

    • Define unit conversions if required. Example:

      • 1 KG = 1000 GRM

      • Add more units if necessary.

  6. Enable Recipe Item

Steps to Configure Recipe for Intermediate Items

    1. Select Recipe For Per

      • From the dropdown, choose the unit for which you are defining the recipe (e.g., KG).

      • Example: Recipe is defined per 1 KG of Special Masala.

    2. Click “+ Add New”

      • Add rows for each ingredient required to prepare the Intermediate Item.

    3. Add First Ingredient (Example: Garam Masala)

      • Item (3): Select the ingredient (Garam Masala).

      • Unit (4): Choose the measurement unit (GM).

      • Qty (5): Enter the quantity (e.g., 750).

      • Cost Per Unit (6): The system will auto-calculate based on purchase cost, but you can review/edit if required.

    4. Add Second Ingredient (Example: Haldi Powder)

      • Item (7): Select the ingredient (Haldi Powder).

      • Unit (8): Choose the measurement unit (GM).

      • Qty (9): Enter the quantity (e.g., 100).

      • Cost Per Unit (10): Check/update cost (e.g., 8).

    5. Add Third Ingredient (Example: Red Chilli)

      • Item (11): Select the ingredient (Red Chilli).

      • Unit (12): Choose the measurement unit (GM).

      • Qty (13): Enter the quantity (e.g., 150).

      • Cost Per Unit (14): Verify cost (e.g., 5).

    6. Repeat for More Ingredients

      • Continue clicking + Add New to include all recipe components.

    7. Save the Recipe

      • Once all ingredients are added with their units, quantities, and costs, click Save.

  7. ✅ After saving:

    • Whenever you manufacture this Intermediate Item, the system will deduct the ingredient stock (Garam Masala, Haldi, Red Chilli, etc.) and add stock for the Intermediate Item (Special Masala).

    • Later, when the Intermediate Item is used in final dishes, only its stock will reduce.
